X-Men Era Two: The Uncanny X-Men (1974-1983)

This is where the X-Men most of us know and love really began. Yes, the orignal five would continue to be valuable and beloved characters for many years; I wouldn’t try to argue otherwise. What I mean is, the title wasn’t actually written very well most of the time before Chris Claremont took over. It got canceled! Claremont took “the strangest teenagers of all” and made them into a team with depth, mystery, diversity, purpose, and intrigue. This is the era where you will find the birth of the Phoenix, Jean Grey’s seduction by the Hellfire Club to become the Dark Phoenix, Days of Future Past, Magneto’s development into one of the greatest villains of all time instead of just another run-of-the-mill maniacal comic book villain, the Brood saga, and the introduction of the New Mutants. A more classic and essential era of X-Men may not exist. That’s not to say there aren’t other runs that are of extremely high quality. Just that this one defined the X-Men for all the generations to come.
