X-Men Era Twenty-Nine: From the Ashes (2024-2026)

After the fall of their nation, Krakoan mutants are thrust back into the countries from whence they came, to a reception that often isn’t very warm. Perceptions of what Krakoa was and what it meant fuel strong reactions. It’s not a great time to be a mutant anymore. Out of necessity, numerous X-teams spring up in places as spread-out as Alaska, Louisiana, Illinois, New York, and even Ireland. Others have their own machinations in mind, too: Apocalypse, in particular, “retires” to Arakko and chooses an heir to carry on his mission for Earth, who will make his mark on the world before the end of the era. Another collection of old X-Men foes unite to harness the mutant genome for their own gain, finding a way to turn adult humans into mutants. It isn’t just mutant/human relations causing world turmoil either – a vampire revolution threatens to tear the world apart, and Dr. Doom uses the event as a catalyst to make his bid for ruling the world!

Overall, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this era. It seemed like a “back-to-basics” from the marketing, and in some ways that is accurate, but this isn’t just a simple reset. For the most part, I found it reasonably compelling. That said, Age of Revelation, the capstone event for this era, suffers from rushed development and odd characterization. It also doesn’t help that it is massively bloated (over 50 issues!), including multiple series that don’t affect the story in any significant way and also aren’t even that good (imo), thus calling into question the reason for their existence. I do not seem to be alone in my dislike for this event, based on what I’ve seen from others. There are some highlights, though, and as a favor I will point out the mini-series which I think are most unnecessary so that you can avoid them if you want.

Note: The AoR minis highlighted in red are unimportant to the overall event and can be skipped if you want. “Unimportant” does not mean the same thing as “irrelevant” – all of these series are very much centered around the changes that happen because of Revelation. But their events will not impact the outcome. They also center on non-X-Men characters, mostly, with only one current X-Man being a primary character in any of them. Under my normal rules for inclusion in the order, these series would not even qualify. I put them here because they are part of the event, and the event is an X-Men event which is contained to its own alternate future timeline, but I think your reading experience may improve by skipping them. I actually kind of liked Cloak or Dagger, but the others are among the weakest of all the series in addition to their lack of importance, and I think they bog down the momentum of the story (which, to be honest, has its own issues even without these to make it worse).
