Despite what I said about Secret Wars not having the truly industry-re-shaping, long-lasting effects it should have, it DID inject new life into a lot of titles in the first couple of years that followed. X-Men was no exception. A new title, Extraordinary X-Men by Jeff Lemire, became the main team title while Uncanny got yet another re-numbering and set its focus on a squad of anti-heroes led by Magneto. This would be the end of Uncanny‘s constant run since 1963, totaling 619 issues when all was said and done. The time-displaced X-Men were still around and doing their own thing, with a couple of new members added from the Jean Grey School. Old Man Logan also joined the main squad of X-Men here, which is why I have the original “Old Man Logan” story arc at the beginning of this era instead of the eight or so years earlier when it actually came out. The original story was an alternate universe thing which never connected with actual Marvel continuity, but during Secret Wars, that version of Logan found his way into the mainline 616 Marvel Universe, so reading it straight through here just works really well. Anyway, this era isn’t just about teams reshuffling and the ending of the flagship title. The major conflict set up from the very start is with the Inhumans. The Terrigen Mists, which give the Inhumans their powers, are apparently poisonous to mutants. Now that the mists are floating freely around the globe, that could be a death sentence for mutant-kind. But getting rid of the mists is a kind of death sentence for the Inhumans as well. This is the first X-era in a while that feels like it has a clear arc from beginning to end, and that helps make it a satisfying and refreshing read.
