This era is another transitory one. The plans for Jonathan Hickman to come in and do his thing were in place, and it feels like a lot of freedom was afforded to the writers to do some very interesting things in the meantime. The era title, “Dissasembled” comes from the final story arc in the new Uncanny X-Men, but it applies well to the whole era because this era is very much like a collection of puzzle pieces that need assembly. It was the most difficult era for me to organize because there is only one ongoing title (Uncanny) and everything else is mini-series, event, or maxi-series. As I said in the introduction to this Order, there are times towards the end of the Order where so many different things are being published at once, continuity errors are basically guaranteed. This is perhaps the most blatant of those times, but I have done my best. This era of X-Men has been met with mixed reception, but I really like a few of the things the writers did here. The wrap-ups for the stories of Old Man Logan and the time-displaced X-Men were handled well. Age of X-Man was a surprisingly well-done and compelling crossover, considering that X-Man is my least favorite X-character of all time. And Matthew Rosenberg’s run on Uncanny delivered excitement and urgency with a cast of characters that had largely been out of focus in the past few years. There is something to the complaint that solicits about the Hickman era sort of ruin the stakes of Rosenberg’s run, but hey, it’s a modern comic book. How long does anything last? If Marvel couldn’t even hold onto the effects of Secret Wars, their biggest event in company history, for more than three years, why should we expect anything to last very long? I have been known to rail against the undermining of stakes in the comic industry, and I don’t like it anymore than anyone else who brings these criticisms. But I don’t believe it should be allowed to ruin a good story. Knowing the context of the comic book environment we live in, sometimes you just have to take it as it comes and enjoy it while it lasts.
