X-Men Era Seventeen: The X-Men Go Through Hell (2010-2011)

One might think that after the X-Men faced down one of their darkest hours in the pages of Second Coming, they would be due for a break. As it turned out, there were still a lot of demons for this team to exercise – sometimes quite literally. The title for this era reflects that this is one of the most consistently dark eras in X-history from a tonal standpoint, as well as the fact that the teams visit several different versions of “hell” or the “underworld” throughout this time period – more frequently than at any other time in their history. Major crossover events here include Age of X (another Legion-inspired alternate reality), Curse of the Mutants (X-Men vs. vampires!), Fear Itself (the Marvel Universe vs. Cul Borson and Sin, daughter of the Red Skull), and The Children’s Crusade (Young Avengers, Avengers, and X-Men search for the Scarlet Witch). Along the way, Cyclops and Wolverine come to an impasse as to how the future of mutantkind should be handled, and the the other X-Men must decide whose philosophy they will follow.

Note: The series X-Men: Prelude to Schism is not included above because, once you read Schism, it is pretty clear that it is out of continuity. Why they wrote a prelude series that doesn’t actually fit into the events of the story is beyond me. However, the series does provide interesting background info on some of the characters and is not a bad read, if you want to read it ahead of Schism anyway.
