X-Men Era Seven: The Age of Apocalypse (1993-1995)

If Inferno was big and bold, the Age of Apocalypse was something different altogether. More than just a crossover, this was an – *extremely temporary* – relaunch; brand new titles, brand new teams, brand new reality. Daringly dramatic, utterly unique, and massive in scope, this event imagined what would have happened in a world where Professor Xavier had died before even having a chance to found the X-Men. People loved it then, and today it is one of the most memorable and praised events in X-history. But as big a deal as this event was (big enough to have the entire era named for it), it wasn’t all that happened in this era. No, before AoA could be set off, there were building blocks to lay in place. Cyclops and Marvel Girl (or just Jean Grey – she ditched the codename in era six) finally got hitched. Then they got sent to a distant future where Apocalypse reigned, and had to stay for years – though it afforded them a second chance to raise their son. Back in the Present, the Phalanx attacked, setting up events that would bring White Queen Emma Frost into the fold. This would begin the long redemption of her character, as she became a mentor for the newest generation of future X-Men, this time called Generation X (an interesting term considering that all of them are almost certainly millienials, but I’m not sure if the world had decided what to call that generation at the time. In any event, Generation X goes along with the X-theme way better so I think we can give them a pass). In the mid-90’s, the X-Men were more popular than they had ever been. They were on top of the comics world.
