Sometime around 2013, Marvel decided that they wanted to reboot their universe. In order to do that, they broke the first one. Some debate is to be had over just who is responsible. The answer Marvel seems to want to go with is “anyone who ever overused time-travel” which of course includes a lot of X-Men. It’s probably more complex than that, but we’ll just say that our favorite mutants don’t do themselves any favors here, with at least three timeline-shaking events being more or less a result of their actions (Wolverine, Beast, and Havok, specifically). Hank McCoy’s actions may not have the greatest effect on the timeline out of the three, but they do make the biggest impact on the X-books. Distraught at Cyclops’ recent actions, he reaches into the past to bring the original five X-Men (including his younger self) into the present, in hopes that their teenage selves can convince Cyclops of where he has gone wrong. Of course, the younger X-Men get stuck in the present, creating a time paradox and giving us another X-title called All-New X-Men (which, considering Brian Michael Bendis’ constant hand in X-centric crossovers, is shockingly his first regular X-title). Meanwhile, it falls to the Illuminati (yeah, they’re still around) to try to save the universe as it comes apart at the seams. Along the way, X-Men Legacy becomes a Legion-centric comic for 25 issues, two different X-Force squads spring into action (and then fight each other), and the great powers of the universe decide that Earth is too much trouble to be trifled with anymore. This era confidently juxtaposes ground-level concerns with the cosmic.
