X-Men Era Nine: Outlaw Mutants (1996-1997)

After Onslaught, the X-Men were, for a bit, the biggest superhero team in the world. That didn’t mean they were beloved. Blamed for the Onslaught fiasco, there was a renewed push against them and of course, against all mutants, because if there’s one thing people are good at it is drawing enoromous stereotypical generalizations about large groups of people. Here we see a bid for President of the United States by anti-mutant hate monger Graydon Creed, and the first appearance of Bastion, a mysterious figure who convinces the U.S. government to let him develop a program which can “protect” people against the mutant “threat.” In the midst of all of this, about half of the X-Men end up off world with the Shi’ar, leaving a short-handed team to try and win the day. In the aftermath, new X-Men join the fold and a long kept secret of Gambit’s is brought to light. This era of X-Men isn’t typically celebrated (actually, none of the eras between AoA and New X-Men really are) but I found it entertaining, especially once things kick into high gear around Uncanny X-Men #341.
