X-Men Era Eleven: Revolution (2000-2001)

The 1990’s were the era where everything needed to be bigger, louder, and as extreme as possible. This extended from the art, to the characters, to the sheer amount of titles being published (the amount of 90’s issues is greater than all that came before!). This era may cover a period that begins in the year 2000 and ends in 2001, but for all intents and purposes, this is the capstone to 90’s X-Men, bringing the majority of the still running storylines to a close and preparing the X-Men for the bold new era to come. Perhaps dissatisfied with reception of their product, Marvel brought Chris Claremont back to Uncanny X-Men again for this era, and while his writing here does suffer in comparison to his legendary original run, it is still mostly enjoyable in my opinion. Much more enjoyable than, say, Warren Ellis’ odd take on X-Force (which turned out to be the last anyone would have on that title for years, as it, along with Generation X and X-Man, were canceled at the end of this era. Actually, that’s not completely true – X-Force technically survived into the following era, but in name only. Another, even odder version of the comic was written for 14 issues by Peter Milligan before the title was truly canceled, with the new team getting their own title called X-Statix. If you enjoyed the 90’s, there are things to enjoy here. But for an era called “Revolution,” this is much more of a swan song. The actual revolution would immediately follow.
