When you have an enormous success of the magnitude of the one Marvel had with the Age of Apocalypse, there is always the question of how to follow it up. Do you go bigger? Can you? One thing that can be said for the Age of Onslaught era – Marvel certainly tried to go bigger. A lot of stuff went into building up to and teasing Onslaught, and the event itself was massive, with greater effects on the Marvel Universe at large than AoA had. It was also a clear sequel to events that had been building since the X-Men Reborn era, and was likely meant to be a sort of capstone to everything that had happened since Claremont left the title. The problem was twofold: many audiences found the main premise to be contrived and untrue to certain characters, and many also did not like the result, which basically took many of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four out of play, leading to the infamous “Heroes Reborn” era for those groups. In retrospect, while those criticisms of Onslaught are, in my opinion, valid, it wasn’t as bad as some might remember it. Unwanted, status-changing experiments feel less egregious when one knows they were only temporary. They can even be fun at times! This era of X-Men is few people’s favorite, but your mileage may vary. In any event, if you loved AoA, there’s enough involving those characters to make this worth reading. There’s also plenty of development that would affect the X-Men in years to come.
